About Kaia Thomas

Kaia Thomas Painting has been my passion since a young age. It is a meditation and anchor, coupled with a desire to share the beauty I see and cherish in this world. There is always that hope that the beauty I see and feel resonates in the viewer through my work. I prefer painting in oils and my subject interests are all over the place, but primarily I love landscapes, particularly the southwest landscape and spend a good portion of my time painting outdoors. Other subject interests include architecture, animals and figurative. I have had a number of inspiring artists and teachers in my life - early influences as a teenager were Georgia O'Keeffe and Maxfield Parrish, later influences include Richard Schmid and Maynard Dixon - just to name a few of course, there are many. I have studied and taken art workshops with Phil Starke, Chris Morel and Glenn Renell. I have participated in painting events such as the Escalante Canyon Art Festival, the Bisbee Plein Air Festival and as guest artist at the Maynard Dixon Campout. I'm now a teacher myself, holding plein air workshops a couple times a year locally. My work has won some top awards including two best of shows and was a finalist for the American Women Artists Spring Online show as well as juried into the Miniatures and More show at the Albuquerque Museum of Art. I also have been published in Southwest Art Magazine. Visit my website for more info and works...www.kaiathomas.com My second interest is photography. Gathering reference for paintings is a large part of the process and I always treat my photos just like I would a painting. I'm careful to choose my composition and I strive to capture the true essence of what I see. If I can't feel it properly through the camera I won't even bother taking a picture. Sometimes the images come out being stand alone art and often I won't paint those images, I leave them be. I love beauty and I love capturing and sharing that beauty, whether it be a painting or photography.
